How to check accessibility in WordPress

A WordPress accessibility checker is most useful when it tells you what to do next. A score alone cannot show whether someone can finish the task that brought them to your site.

Start with the pages people use.

Choose your home page, an article, a contact form and an important conversion journey. For a shop, include a product page and test cart and checkout states separately. Public HTML scans do not cover every logged-in or payment state.

Run a scan, then group the work.

Xargaar Accessibility Scanner checks public pages in batches and groups findings by problem, with affected URLs and markup examples. It includes checks for image alternatives, headings, names, forms and ARIA, plus RTL review hints. It runs from Tools > A11y Scanner in WordPress.

Do the checks software cannot finish.

Use the keyboard. Zoom in. Check labels and error messages. Inspect contrast in the rendered design. Test assistive technology and involve people with disabilities. A page can have no scanner findings and still be difficult or impossible to use.

Choose fixes, not promises.

The plugin offers optional visitor-output fixes without rewriting stored posts or theme files. Check each fix in your theme. Generic labels and titles may need better context; automated fixes are not a substitute for good content and design.

Keep the workflow local.

The free scanner needs no account, remote scanning service or subscription. Scans request your site's configured origin and stay in the current browser tab. Save your own review notes before closing it.

What to install.

WordPress 6.5+, PHP 8.0+, PHP DOM and working loopback requests are required. HTML output fixes need WordPress 6.9+. Install from the official plugin directory, then use the checklist below for your first review.

A first review is a starting point, not a compliance certificate. Automated checks and short checklists can miss barriers. Test real journeys and include people who use assistive technology.
